Once at Hijaz railway, you will never feel like you are in Saudi Arabia. The reason may be the type of
architecture the station and buildings have and quite amazing landscape where it is situated. |

During the Arab Revolt of 1916-18, the hijaz railway inevitably became a target of anti-Turkish forces.
It was extensively damaged, and the section in Saudi Arabia was finally abandoned in about 1924.

Route (Trip: 2 wheel drive):
From Riyadh: Take Qassim/Madinah Road (Expressway No.65N). Drive until you reach
Buraydah (Qassim) which is 343 km from Riyadh city. Here, you take your way to
Hail which is 665 km from Riyadh. From Hail, look for the signboard to
Al-Ula which is where you can halt for the night. Staying in Mada'in Salih at night is not permitted. Hail to Al-Ula is around 406 km. From Al-Ula, you can start early in the morning to Mada'in Salih which is at a distance of 40 km north of Al-Ula.
Hijaz Railway is within the boundary of Mada'in Salih. You will be guided by sign boards.
From Madinah: Take your route to Al-Ula. Most part of the road is undivided highway
(during my visit). you will be passing by the historical Khaybar at about 193 km. Madinah to Al-Ula is around 402 km. |
