Mother and baby camels

Mother and baby camel at Ad Dahna desert. The baby camel is around two weeks old. At birth a baby camel will weigh only about 30-40 kilograms and can take a few hours before they are able to stand up.

The Bactrian (or Asian) and the Dromedary (or Arabian) camels are the two types of camels of which Dromedaries are the the most common found in the Saudi Arabian desert. Bactrian camels has two humps while Dromedary has only one hump.

Kangaroo Rat

Kangaroo Rat, common name for certain rodents that have storage pouches on the outside of their cheeks. Kangaroo rats are given their popular name because they hop like kangaroos on their extremely long hind legs. The animals range from 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8 in) in body length; the tail is usually longer than the body.

Kangaroo rats live in colonies in arid regions and burrow into the ground, from which they emerge at night to feed on seeds, fruits, vegetation, and some insects. They are capable of surviving for long periods without water, which they derive from their food; they are also said to have highly efficient kidneys for the removal of wastes.

This one was spotted at night during a desert trek at about 120km north of Riyadh. Sorry that we had to scare him by chasing to get a shot.

A night in the desert can be quite surprising. A sunset during a night camp in the acacia valley en route edge of the world.

Our first campsite on a trek to Wabar Meteorite Crater in the Empty Quarter (Rub Al Khali) around 300 kilometer from the city of Riyadh.
